Solvolitic reactivity of 2, 4-dinitrophenolates and fluorinated benzoates
The heterolysis rate constants for any SN1 solvolysis reaction can be expressed with the three-parameter LFER equation log k (25 °C) = sf (Nf + Ef), in which k is the first order rate constant, sf (slope of the correlation line) and Nf (negative intercept on the abscissa) are the nucleofuge-specific parameters, and Ef is the electrofugality parameter. Ef is an independent parameter determined with the substituents on the benzhydryl system, while Nf and sf are defined for a combination of the leaving group and the solvent. Solvolytic reactivity of 2, 4- dinitrophenolates, pentafluorobenzoates and trifluorobenzoates have been studied by measuring the solvolysis first-order rate constants in aqueous solvents from which the nucleofuge- specific parameters have been calculated. Those parameters enable comparison of leaving group abilities with other commonly used leaving groups. They also indicate importance of solvation effects in solvolysis.
