Opinion of pre-school teachers - current and future - of their role in child's life
The environment in which children spend their early years makes a great influence on their development. In the project Methods and models in the education of pre-school children in kindergartens we have been particularly interested in the pre-school teachers’ opinion, motivation, satisfaction, expectation and attitudes towards their work. Two of the open ended questions we have posed were about the role of the pre-school teacher in the child’s life. There were two sentences which they had to end: Pre-school teacher is……… because…... Child is………. because………………. The analysis of the answers has been processed. We have also compared the answers of current kindergarten teachers (N = 88) and future pre-school teachers as well as the first year university students (N = 108) and the last (3rd) year university students (N = 93). Our results show that the future pre-school teachers have more optimistic and enthusiastic explanations than the current kindergarten teachers (e. g. Pre-school teacher is a model, “mirror”, and another parent to the child, because he spends a lot of time with him. Child is a “sponge”, interested in everything.) Current kindergarten teachers have sentences like: Pre-school teacher is responsible to everyone – ministry, parents, children, because all have some demands…Child is a sponge, but not squeezed…yet… like pre-school teachers. Finding could be explained in the means of expectations. Students have more idealistic approach.
