Diversity of Ppd-D1 gene in winter wheat varieties
Photoperiod sensitivity is important trait for winter wheat growing and high yielding. Today, climatic changes in some traditional wheat growing regions caused day temperature rising and shortening of water supply. Winter wheat varieties should avoid high summer temperature and heat stress with earlier flowering time and photoperiod insensitivity. Screening of photoperiod insensitivity in winter wheat varieties is important for planning future breeding programs and selecting parents for crosses. Aims of this research were: (a) to determine existence of Ppd-D1a allele in 53 winter wheat varieties registered from 1936 until today in Croatia, Italy, Austria and France using diagnostic marker developed by Beales at al. (2007) ; (b) evaluation of the difference in heading date of examined winter wheat varieties in field conditions of Eastern Croatia. PCR analysis was conducted at the Institute in Hungary. Field trial was conducted during two vegetation years (2007/08 and 2008/09) near Osijek, Eastern Croatia, and means for heading time was calculated for tested wheat varieties. From 53 tested varieties 30 had Ppd-D1a allele, 22 had Ppd-D1b allele and one was heterozygote. Means of heading time for examined varieties differ depending on pedigree, registry date and Ppd-D1 allele.
