Clinical spectrum of Neurolues in Neuropsychiatric Morbidity in Bjelovar County, Croatia, from 1931 to 1940.
Syphilis (lues) is a contagious systemic disease caused by Treponema pallidum and characterized by sequential clinical stages and years of asymptomatic latency. With this retrospective study we tried to estimate frequency of hospitalizations of patients with neurosyphilis (neurolues) in the period from 1931 to 1940, according to the available data from the Register of Patients of General Public County Hospital in Bjelovar kept in the National Archives in Bjelovar. During the decade before World War II, there was no adequate treatment available for this disease. In the observed period, 26.104 patients were treated in the Hospital, of which 1.488 were admitted due to illness with neurological and/or psychiatric symptoms. Among them, 299 patients had some manifestation of damaged central or peripheral nervous system caused by syphilis. The most frequent one was syphilitic myelopathy.
