Detection of Thallium and Uranium in Well Water and Biological Specimens of an Eastern Croatian Population

The aim of this study is to determine the concentration of thallium and uranium in water, body fluids and hair of the subjects from three communities (Ćelije, Draž and Potnjani) in Eastern Croatia, and to determine whether there are statistically significant differences in the concentration of thallium and uranium in body fluids and hair. Thallium and uranium concentrations were determined using inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry in the samples of water, urine, and serum of subjects from all three communities, while hair samples were taken from subjects from Ćelije and Draž. Thallium concentration differed significantly in the samples of urine and serum taken from subjects in all three communities. It was significantly higher in urine samples from subjects in Draž and in the serum samples from subjects from Ćelije, compared to other two communities. Concentration of thallium in hair samples of the subjects did not differ significantly (p=0.506) between Ćelije and Draž. Uranium concentration was significantly (p=0.001) different in the samples of urine and water, but not in the serum samples of subjects from all three communities. Statistically significant difference (p<0.001) was found in the concentration of uranium in urine between subjects in Draž and subjects in Ćelije and Potnjani. In the hair samples of subjects in Draž and Ćelije uranium concentrations were mostly below the detection limit. Our study has shown that there are differences in the concentrations of thallium and uranium in water and biological fluids in communities that have been studied.
