ASSESSMENT OF STUDENT WRITING IN THE TEST OF LANGUAGE COMPETENCE AT THE FACULTY OF TEACHER EDUCATION
This paper presents a continuation of the work on designing the Test of Language Competence (TLC) for students of the Graduate Programme of Primary Education in Combination with the Study of the English language at the Faculty of Teacher Education, University of Zagreb. More specifically, the paper analyses assessment of the writing part of the TLC in terms of structure (including task achievement and text effectiveness) and accuracy (including morphology, syntax, lexis and spelling). The aim of the analysis is to consider how the criteria of structure on the one hand, and accuracy on the other, can be broken down and described to offer a reliable means of assessing student writing. Such an approach to writing assessment benefits students in helping them to analyse and improve their writing skills, to devise appropriate writing tasks, and to assess writing in an objective and principled way which they will engage in as future teachers. Essays written by students undertaking the TLC made up the corpus for this analysis.
