The “Richter Collection” in Zagreb (Croatia): an example of cultural and tourism revitalization of the city

Cultural offer, including in particular museums, become a key factor in development of city and/or space, as well as the possibility of tourism development, and thus the generator of additional income. Places and spaces of art collections are also link between culture and tourism that must be approached with precaution, because the art itself should not be turned into a business and, in general, art collections should not be solely understood as an „tourist attractions“. Thereby, it is necessary to persevere in developmental strategies of art collections, which must be based on a balance of art and tourism, executing/fulfilling equally role of expanding knowledge, preservation and increase of heritage values, supporting cultural democracy, and participating as active factor in creating progressive tourism policy. It is necessary, therefore, to evaluate the effects of place and space of art collections on cultural and tourist level, and properly understand their interaction in the development or renovation of the city space. As an example it will serve the „Richter Collection“ in Zagreb (Croatia) located in a two-storey villa in the northern part of the city, where it is presented complete creative work of one of the most influential Croatian artist of the 1950s and 1960s. Vjenceslav Richter and his wife Nada Kareš Richter, at the year 1980, donated to the City of Zagreb artworks and their family house with intention of creating a place where Constructivist Art could be studied, where young artists could gathered, as well as to encourage the spreading of cultural contents outside the immediate center of Zagreb. This article/paper will present and analyze the „Richter Collection“, its permanent display, program and its cultural importance on local, regional and international levels, its cultural and tourism potentials, and further guidelines will be given that Collection becomes of larger tourist interest.
