Turn Taking in Learner Talk
The paper deals with turn taking in learner talk. The aim of the paper is to gain better insight into the nature of learners' turn taking with respect to the techniques of turn taking and the purposes for which learners take turns. Twenty-nine recordings of EFL classroom talk in Croatian schools were analysed. A quantitative analysis was made to discover the distribution of the techniques and functions of turn taking with respect to the level of language learning and the type of communicative activity. The findings show that the techniques and purposes of turn taking in learner talk are not equally present. The results also show that the presence of a particular technique of turn taking mainly depends on the type of communicative activity. Further, the findings indicate that the purposes of learners' turn taking might be influenced by the type of communicative activity and the level of language proficiency.
