Arterial elasticity- Carotid artery E-tracking versus arteriograph method on Brachial artery.

INTRODUCTION: The evaluation of periferal arterial elasticity become popular method primary and secondary prevention strategy of cardiovascular diseases. AIM: Comparing two different methods ( arteriograph data derived from brachial artery investigation and carotid ultrasonic e- TRACKING) applied for arterial elasticity evaluation, we designed the study that included healthy volunteers and symptomatic coronary patients after coronary angiography. The aim was to establish the applicability of the two similar methods used to evaluate the elasticity of the arterial wall in healthy individuals as well as in patients that suffer from coronary artery disease (CAD). METHODS: The investigation was done in 49 individuals (20 healthy volunteers and 29 CAD patients). They were all subjected to both non invasive measurements of artery elasticity. By using ALOKA α 100 ultrasound machine, linear probe and e-TRACKING method, β index, augmentation index ( AI ) and the speed of pals wave velosity progression( PWV ) were evaluated. The mesurments were performed on the common carotid artery, 1 to 2 centimeters before the bifurcation. Augmentation index of the brachial artery (AI brah), augmentation index of aorta ( AO aortic ) and the speed of puls wave velocity progression by using TensioMedTM arteriograph were measured thereafter in the same conditions . RESULTS: The average age was 28.62± 9.51 years for healthy individual and for coronary patients 61.5± 8.06 years. Table1. Results of the Doppler e-TRACKING method: Parameters of the arterial wall elasticity Healthy/ coronary patients Significance P value β index 4.46/11.9 (± 1.56/5.08) 0.002 AI -1.38/23.15 (± 6.9/13.32) 0.027 PWV 4.61/7.65 (± 0.92/1.44) 0.042 Tablie 2. Results of the TensioMedTM Arteriograph : Parameters of the arterial wall elasticity Healthy/coronary patients Significance P value AI brah -47.56/8.07 (± 15.51/21.38) 0.301 AI aortic 14.64/35.98 (± 10.89/9.06) 0.635 PWW 7.05/11.08 (± 2.32/1.71) 0.421 CONCLUSION: Parameters given from the arteriograph comparing to the results of e-TRACKING method discriminate healthy individuals from CAD population significantly better. Arteriograph as the method did not show any significant difference in the arterial wall elasticity between healthy and patient population. Nominal values according to the two different population exist but the difference was not statisticaly significant. Increasing the sample size need to confirm the theses that e-TRACKING method is superior in evaluation of coronary healthy and CAD population
