Problems of Wastewater Treatment in Coastal Areas
The wastewater treatment in coastal areas is usually faced with several specific problems. First of all, problems may arise due to the seasonal variation of the quantity and the quality of the waste water. Thus the wastewater treatment plants have to be adaptable for even several times higher hydraulic and biological loads during the touristic season. Besides, one must take in account the infiltration of the sea water into the sewage system and the possible undesirable effect of the increased chloride concentrations on the biological processes of the wastewater treatment. Moreover, seawater contains significant amounts of sulfates, thus, odor problems may arise due to generation of hydrogen sulfide, as well as several organic sulfur compounds, in anaerobic condition. In the present paper the theoretical principles, their experimental verification and some of technological solutions, concerning construction of the wastewater treatment plants in coastal areas will be presented and discussed.
