Age-related changes of neurochemically different subpopulations of cardiac spinal afferent neurons in rat
Unlike somatic spinal afferents, neurochemically different populations of cardiac spinal afferent neurons experience morphological and neurochemical changes related to ageing. A major decrease in total number of cardiac spinal afferent neurons occurs in senescence primarily due to decreased number of N52-positive and IB4- negative neurons. It seems that the nociceptive innervation is preserved due to unchanged number and increased size of IB4-positive unmyelinated neurons.
