Differences in goal orientation and perception of success in sport and exercise in children and parents

The study intended to to examine the relationship between the goal motivation and motivation for children's participation in sports or exercise, and determining the difference in the perception of success in sport and exercise among children and their parents. The study also aimed to determine the relationship of motivation to the task and motivation towards the ego. The sample was composed of children aged 9 to 11 years (N = 203) and from their parents (N = 181). The Participation Motivation Questionnaire (PMQ ; Gill et al., 1983), Task and Ego Orientation in Sport Questionnaire (TEOSQ ; Duda and Nicholls, 1992) and Perception of Success Questionnaire (PSQ ; Roberts et al., 1998) were employed. Statistically significant difference between ego orientation and task orientation of children was established in favor of greater orientation on the task. Mean values of the perception of success in sport among children and parents indicates that in the perception of success, both, children and parents are more focused on the task. There were no differences between children and parents in ego orientation, but it seems that the task orientation of children is higher than of parents.
