Influence of Critical Stress Intensity Factor on Hydraulic Fracture Geometry and Treating Pressure
Hydraulic fracturing theory and mathematical models for hydraulic fracture design are based on the assumption of linear elastic behavior of rocks. According to the linear elastic fracture mechanics, fracture propagation criterion in rocks is controlled by critical stress intensity factor and by effective stress distribution in the fracture. Effective stress distribution in the elasticity equation controls fracture width, depending in the same time on fluid flow through the fracture. Fracture geometry and treating pressure are results of simultaneous solving elasticity equation and fluid flow equation, satisfying fracture propagation criterion. According to that, critical stress intensity factor can influence fracture geometry, treating pressure, and other fracture parameters related to geometry and treating pressure. The influence of critical stress intensity factor on fracture geometry, treating pressure and other parameters important in hydraulic fracture design, such as fracturing fluid volume, propant mass and fracture conductivity, are analyzed in this paper by hydraulic fracturing three-dimensional simulator.
