Personal and General Belief in a Just World as Predictors of Students' Life Satisfaction and Locus of Control

Research on personal correlates of the Belief in a Just World (BJW) that followed the distinction between BJW for self and in general suggests that BJW association with life satisfaction and other indicators of well-being is primarily due to the personal BJW. The aim of our study was to examine if the same association would hold for a group of Croatian students and for some other concepts known to be related to BJW. Therefore, a group of 206 students of the Faculty of Science and Arts in Zadar was given a measure of life satisfaction (Quality of Life scale; Krizmanic & Kolesaric, 1992) and a measure of locus of control (ANS-IE scale, Strickland & Novicki, 1974). Personal and General BJW were assessed with Croatian version of Personal BJW scale (Dalbert, 1993) and General BJW scale (Dalbert, Montada & Schmitt, 1987). The results showed that the students more strongly endorsed the personal than the general BJW, and that personal BJW was more important in predicting one's life satisfaction. These results are in line with previous research findings (e.g. Lipkus et al, 1996). Moreover, we found that the personal BJW compared to the general BJW was more strongly related to the locus of control. Overall, our study results suggest that the two beliefs in a just world can be reliably differentiated, and are still another contribution to the evidence on validity of the Personal BJW and General BJW scales.
