Organotin compounds in seawater and mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis along the Croatian Adriatic coast
In this work first data on the level of organotin compounds (OTC) in seawater and mussels collected along the entire Croatian Adriatic coast are presented. Samples were collected in 2009 and 2010 at 48 locations (12 marinas, 22 ports and 14 reference sites), representing different levels of maritime activities. Butyltins (BuT) were found in all analyzed samples, representing >97 % of OTC, and ranged from 0.46 ng Sn L-1 to 27.98 ng Sn L-1 in seawater and from <6 ng Sn g-1 to 1675 ng Sn g-1 in mussels. The highest concentrations of BuT and tribytiltin (TBT) were found in marinas, somewhat lower in ports, which indicated a recent input of TBT. Obviously, the Adriatic coast is still polluted with TBT, in spite of the fact that TBT-containing antifouling paints are banned in Croatia since 2008. It is questionable how much TBT pollution decreased since 2005, when a high incidence of imposex was established in the same area.
