The early maps of central Dalmatian Coastland from the Novak Collection
This article represents a tribute to the Novak Collection but also an overview of the early modern mapping of Dalmatian coastland. Using a methodological approach of comparative analysis of selected maps, the author correlates appearance of first maps of central and Northern Dalmatian coastline with their practical and pragmatic purposes, actual political circumstances, contribution of local cartographers and influence on further development of map production. The contribution of local cartographers was of the significant importance since they had the personal knowledge and opportunity to collect the most accurate information. The outcome of cartographic work of two well-known renaissance graphic artists from Šibenik, Martin Rota and Natale Bonifacio, was better understanding of Dalmatian not just political but also cultural and ideological geographies and identities and led to the better reputation of Croatian professionals in the broader European cultural context.
