Despite degeneracy of the genetic code synonymous codons are not used with equal frequencies within a (meta)genome. Most importantly, genes that are expressed at high levels, i.e. housekeeping genes, use a preferred set codons. This finding allows us to predict gene expressivity within a (meta)genome by measuring the distance of each gene from a reference set of housekeeping genes.
