The American Media and the (Perception of the) War in Iraq
The focus of this work is on the media as 'tailors' of discourse, i.e. on the language of the media (primarily U.S. media) with regards to the issue of political prejudice and, more generally, the issue of language and ideology. The main theoretical questions are the semantic and ideological shifts, which are analysed on a series of lexical examples taken from texts relative to the war in Iraq, found in U.S. media. These examples also show how the media, by shifting the semantic boundaries in language, shape both public attitudes and social policies.
language and ideology; discourse analysis; (social) context; polarization
