Crosslinguistic diversities and cognitive universals in the (semantic) domain of SUPERPOSITION.
It is generally accepted that the conceptual domain of SUPERPOSITION can, from the linguistic point of view, be lexicalized with a single lexical item (covering a general meaning that can be paraphrased as 'higher than'), or in terms of lexical items that lexicalize subordinate concepts such as 'higher than' +/- ATTACHMENT (e.g. the well known distinction between the English 'on' and 'above'). By exploring the linguistic realisation of the domain of SUPERPOSITION in English and Croatian (on/over/above vs. na/(iz)nad/preko) we undertake a contrastive study on the use of both these patterns in discourse. The aim of the analysis is to see whether there is any way to bridge the obvious gaps between varying crosslinguistic categorisation patterns and universal basis for conceptualisation.
