Immunohistochemical Features of Invasive Breast Cancer Cases: a 2.5 Year Survey with 501 Patients

Introduction: Breast cancer patients’ data including age, histological diagnosis, TN status, grade, HER2/neu gene amplification, estrogen receptor (ER) and progesterone receptor (PR) status are valuable prognostic and predictive factors. Material and methods: In a period from January 1st 2009 till June 30th 2011, invasive breast cancers were found in 501 patients at the Pathology and Forensic Medicine Department of Osijek University Hospital. Age of these patients ranged from 26 to 90 years (mean age was 60.8 years). The data were statistically analyzed with Chi-square tests. Results: According to histologic type, most common were ductal invasive carcinomas (385 - 76.8%), and lobular invasive carcinomas (64 - 12.8%). 245 (48.9) patients were in T1 stage, 216 (43.1%) in T2 stage, 36 (7.2%) in T3 stage, and 4 (0.8%) in T4 stage. Lymph node metastases were diagnosed in 216 (43.1%) patients. Most of the tumors were moderately well differentiated (205 – 40.9%), followed by well differentiated (180 – 35.9%), and poorly differentiated ones (116 – 23.2%). Her2/neu amplification was found in 93 (18.6%) cases. Most of the patients are expected to respond to endocrine therapy due to presence of estrogen and/or progesterone receptors (403 – 80.4%). Triple negative tumors were found in 64 (12.8%) patients. Conclusion: Patients were divided in two groups according to age: less than 60 years, and 60 and more years old. Younger patients' group was characterized with more poorly differentiated and less well differentiated tumors (p=0.001) ; with less ER positive tumors (p=0.03) ; and with more triple negative tumors than expected (p=0.007). Tumors with HER2/neu amplification and triple negative tumors were poorly differentiated more then expected (p<0.0001). Keywords: breast cancer, receptors, estrogen, progesterone, erbB-2
