Microscopy in analysis of functional ceramics and nanostructures
The application of electron microscopy for achievement of structure-properties-functionality correlation is of the main importance especially in the case of the nanostructured materials. As the demonstration, three case studies will be presented. The sensory and luminescent properties of the two series of ZrTiO2 ceramics, and the catalytic properties of the phases obtained in Bi-Fe-O system will be considered. The functional properties will be elucidated in the view of the morphology and the structure obtained at the nano scale. Ziconium titanate (ZrTiO4, ZT) is widely used in the electronic industry as high-performance dielectric, but also has applications for ceramics sensors and photo catalysis. The goethite as a catalyst in the heterogeneous photo-Fenton-like process was proposed to degrade several compounds and/or improve the biodegradability of aqueous effluents. The synthesis conditions, as well as dopants and additives (in this case bismith) to the goethite structure have remarkable effects on the particle morphology, size, and the stability.
