Sažetak
In this paper we will first briefly look into some key ideas of socially grounded approaches to language development as well as different views and definitions of context, after which we will deal with the role of various learning contexts in second language acquisition. Subsequently we will propose an expanded defini-tion of the at home context which is based on the assumption that time and space is a dynamic variable in language learning that has to be accounted for (cf. Bialystok 1994 ; Cohen 1994 ; Swain 1995 ; Chalhoub-Deville and Tarone 1996). Finally, we will present the results of the empirical study whose purpose was to compare the out-of-school language learning context in Croatia in relation to two foreign languages: German and English.
