Modelling processes of nutrient enrichment and organic matter decomposition originating from fish farms

Operating aquaculture site releases metabolic fish products (faeces and ammonium) and excess feed in surrounding waters. Excess feed and faeces contribute to the organic matter loading of the site, while ammonium contributes to the nutrient enrichment. Organic matter loading beneath cages jeopardizes local benthic community, while nutrient enrichment disturbs surrounding water quality. The main goal of this thesis is to develop tools for the assessment of fish farm impact on benthos and surrounding water quality. The research encompasses literature review, experiments, field work on study site, and modelling. As a result, two models are developed, parametrized and calibrated. First model is for the organic matter decomposition dynamics and oxygen utilisation. The other model developed is for the assessment of nutrient enrichment on phytoplankton and zooplankton community in surrounding waters.
