Zagreb school of animated film: a flourishing of individual poetics in the context of various collectivist tendencies
Although developed within a context of socialist Yugoslavia, Zagreb school of animated film was a stylistic tour-de-force of modernist animation (or "reduced" animation as some experts call it) but it was, nevertheless, heavily influenced by the artistic and social developments in the West. This includes the influence of commercial animation, one of the starting points of Zagreb school from the stylistic point of view, but also the thematic orientation towards the universal topics of alienation typical for the leftist critique of Western (capitalist) societies.
