A study on continuous roll casting for production of aluminium alloys strips

An approach by continuous roll – casting, for production of aluminium alloys strip, has been described in this paper. It shows that this process is an established rout to produce aluminium sheet directly from the melt. In the continuous roll casting process the metal is deformed by rolling even before it has solidified completely. Despite an enormous potential, various defects may arise during casting which limit the range of operating conditions suitable for use commercially. Therefore, a range of casting conditions has been investigated producing aluminium alloys sheet of 6, 30 -6, 50 mm in thickness. Internal and external defect sources and the influence of casting parameters on casting conditions (i.e. casting speed, rolling force, contact angle, mechanical roll camber etc.) has been described. The main goal was to present ability of optimization of roll casting parameters in order to achieve a constant strip thickness. Features like casting parameters were investigated from a fundamental standpoint and some experimental observations discussed. The study shows that contact angle, casting speed, rolling force and mechanical roll camber should have the greatest influence on the final strip thickness, and that the examined parameters agree well with the theoretical standpoints.
