Synthesis of Mullite and Cu/Fe Mullite and their Catalytic Activity in Wet Peroxide Oxidation of Phenol
The preparation of mullite and Cu/ or Fe substituted mullie from zeolite precursors is obtained in the following sequences: First step is the ion-exchange of zeolite A with NH4+ following by partial ion exchange with Cu2+ or Fe3+ from copper nitrate and iron chloride solutions, respectively. Post synthesis thermal treatment yields to stable ceramic materials as mullite and Cu/Fe incorporated mullite. The formed ceramic materials are useful as catalysts in wet peroxide oxidation of phenol. They are characterized by Fourier transform Infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and Scanning electron microscopy. The substituted cation plays the main role of the catalytic activity and from the performed measurements was evident that Fe substituted mullite shows the highest catalytic activity keeping the same experimental conditions (temperature, concentration of phenol and peroxide, catalyst mass). Increasing the temperature, the catalyst activity was decreasing for all the cases.
