Classroom observation as a learning tool in pre-service teacher education
This paper deals with classroom observation as an important tool in teacher preparation. An attempt is being made to gain an insight into the nature of learning from the observation of classroom processes. The aim of the study is to identify the ways in which student teachers make the experience of observing personally meaningful. The analyses are made on the body of observation tasks that were accomplished by 74 student teachers of English as a foreign language during their school- based teaching practice. The tasks are analysed with respect to student teachers' engagement in reflecting upon and exploring aspects of teaching practices and their attempts to understand the factors that influence decision-making in the EFL classroom. Special attention is paid to the student teachers' awareness about the responsibilities they will have as teachers. The discussion is based on the qualitative analysis of the findings. The conclusive part of the paper brings some implications of this study for the future investigation of observation processes as well as for the future organisation of classroom observation activities in teacher preparation.
