Sažetak
In the paper the author analyzes Ivan Kukuljević’s book Glasoviti Hrvati prošlih vjekova (Notable Croats of Past Ages) which was published in 1886. Kukuljević’s biographical texts are brought into relation with a native biographical tradition, in order toshow that Kukuljević knew his predecessors well and completely overcame them. Regarding Kukuljević’s historiographical work, the paper shows the genesis of his national consciousness, explaining the relation between Croatian and Yugoslav ideological patterns in the 19th century. Also, the paper attempts to clarify the relation of Kukuljević’s biographical method with the new trends in natural sciences and tkeir influences on humanistic discourse, emphasizing the new experience of nationality in the context of strengthening of bourgeois society. All this as is shown in this paper was a kind of reinterpretation of the educational ideas produced in Vienna in the middle of the 19th century. The study interprets Kukuljević’s book on notable Croats observing in it two ideological paratexts, on the problems of writing biographical method in connection with new theoretical views on the problems of writing biographies. The paper ends with a conclusion that the significance of Kukuljević’s biographical texts is much greater than it has been ackowledged in literary historiography until today.
