Alleviation of Potassium Nutrition Problems in Maize by Genotype on K-fixing soils in Croatia (a review)
Nutritional disorders in maize accompanied with potassium (K) deficiency and high levels of exchangeable magnesium (Mg) have been found on some clay soils in Croatia. Two groups of maize hybrids (containing as male parent Os1-48 and Os87-24 genotype, respectively) grown on strong K-fixing soil. The hybrids of Os1-48 parent had considerable lower stalk lodging in comparison with those of Os87-24 (4.9 % and 59.1 %, respectively), lower stalk-P contents (0.13 % and 0.22 % P) and higher yield (5.64 and 4.16 t/ha). Os1-48 parent could be used in breeding program as source of stalk lodging resistance. By the second trial, ten maize hybrids were grown on K-deficient soil. Two hybrids (OsSK568 and OsSK602) yielded over 8.0 t/ha and are suitable for growing under these soil stress conditions. Six maize hybrids were grown on increasing rates of K fertilization. The hybrids OsSK377 was relative tolerant (yield on the control: 2.47 t/ha), while the hybrids OsSK552, OsSK644 and Bc66-61 could be designated as sensitive (mean 1.53 t/ha) to abiotic stress of low K supply. By ameliorative K fertilization up to 3250 kg K2O/ha maize yields were increased close to four-fold (1.83 and 7.04 t/ha, respectively).
