Raising Pupils' Intercultural Awareness by Means of the European Language Portfolio in Croatian Primary Schools

The article discusses the importance of culture in the foreign language classroom and the need to raise pupils' intercultural awareness and also to promote individual plurilingualism. In Croatian primary schools, teachers are encouraged to do so by following the guidelines in the National Curriculum. In the process they can apply tools such as the European Language Portfolio and use classroom activities which promote pupils' intercultural awareness and develop their intercultural competence. This was also one of the aims of the project ”Developing Pupils’ Independence by Means of the European Language Portfolio (ELP)”. The article presents the results of analyses of teachers’, pupils’ and parents’ attitudes and opinions regarding the usefulness of the ELP as a tool for promoting cultural diversity. Also, classroom activities used with pupils to enhance their intercultural awareness are presented and analysed in the article.
