Study of Stable Isotopes (δ18O, δ2H) in Precipitation in Croatia. Can we learn something about the Climate Change?
The precipitation as the input into the water system and its stable isotope composition is a basic quantity whose knowledge is required for the proper use and management of water resources. We monitor the stable isotopic composition (δ18O and δ2H) of precipitation in over 25 stations in various locations in Croatia. The δ18O, δ2H and d-excess altitude effects have been extracted from the measured data base. This data base has been used to produce a gridded map of δ18O for Croatia. In a few locations the data extend over fairly long time periods of up to 40 years. Correlations between the precipitation isotope ratios and meteorological quantities may provide further evidence of the climate change to warmer and drier conditions that appears to be manifest globally as well as in the local weather situation (see, for example, the recent topical conference “Croatian Waters facing the Challenge of Climate Changes“, 18. - 21. 5. 2011, Opatija, Croatia).
