A new generation of winter wheat varieties developed at the Bc Institute Zagreb

Work on breeding winter wheat in the Zagreb Bc Institute has been continuously in progress for more than 60 years. The results of it are many varieties registered in the Republic of Croatia and abroad. Taking into account the needs and demands of producers, a new generation of winter wheat varieties have been developed such as Bc Mira, Bc Renata, Dora, Marina, Bc Lidija, Bc Lira, Bc Irena and Bc Anica. Bc Irena and Bc Anica are the newly registered winter wheat varieties in the Zagreb Bc Institute in 2010. (Tables 1, 2). The main characteristic of these varieties is a broad genetic base that provides a high yield potential, stability and very good grain and flour quality. They present a progress in wheat breeding ; therefore the aim of this paper is to introduce them to agricultural producers. The results of the Committee for Variety Registration, the results of small and large-scale trials as well as the results of seed production confirm a high agronomic value of the newly released Bc winter wheat varieties (Table 3, Fig. 1, 2). In the tests conducted they have surpassed the checks for the most important yield components. Due to their morphological structure and biological properties new Bc varieties express resistance to lodging and the most important wheat diseases. It should be noted that Bc Renata and Bc Lira are also suitable for ecological production, and under conditions of rationalized technology they achieve very good results. The analyzed quality parameters indicate that the varieties Dora, Marina, Bc Lidija, Bc Irena and Bc Anica meet the requirements of the milling and baking industry, while Bc Mira, Bc Renata and Bc Lira can be grouped into a class of high-quality varieties (Table 4). This new generation of Bc varieties provides an opportunity for our farmers to sow and produce better material and with increased quality, which is a step forward in wheat production. This certainly is the goal of breeding.
