Magnesium in leukocytes and plasma of asthmatic children
Mg2+is a co-factor in more than 325 enzymes systems in cells and is the second most abundant intracellular cation. It is important in numerous physiological functions among others muscle contraction. Mg2+ acts as smooth muscle relaxator and Ca-canals blocker in vitro. We decided to test changes of total Mg2+ concentration in plasma and in leukocytes of 16 healthy children and 26 patients with bronchoopstruction ageing 3 to 14 years. The samples were taken at first day of bronchoopstruction and five days after the acute attack. During these period children were under therapy with salbutamol. Plasma Mg2+ concentration increase for about 40 % in patients (first day 0.60b0.035 mmol/L and five days later 0.62b0.023 mmol/L) when compared to the healthy children (0.44b0.041 mmol/L). However, leukocyte Mg2+ concentration showed significant changes. At first day of bronchoopstruction Mg2+ in leukocytes statistically decreased (about 70%) in patients (1.16b0.31 mmol/g prot.) towards the healthy children (3.42b0.92 mmol/g prot). Five days later Mg2+ values in leukocytes statistically increased (3.28b1.09 mmol/g prot) and almost reach the values in healthy group. The results obtained indicate that determination of Mg2+ concentration in leukocytes could be used in the assessment of asthmatic pathology.
