Influence of the Harmonics in the Load Current on Design of the Traction Transformers

The EMU transformer in operation is loaded with current which contains a considerable amount of harmonics. The harmonics in load current raise the eddy loss and stray flux loss and increases the total loss calculated or measured with purely sinusoidal current which is required to take in consideration when designing in order to correctly calculate the losses and conduct the thermal dimensioning of the transformer. In this paper the EMU transformer is analysed in order to obtain data about the influence of harmonic components in load current. Test results obtained in Končar D&ST test station under sinusoidal current loading conditions were compared to results of measurements performed during the loading conditions in service. The results of the analysis have shown the impact of higher load current harmonic components on the transformer's load losses and temperature rise.
