VHE detection of the blazar 1ES 0033+595 by MAGIC
After re-analysis of archival data, the MAGIC Collaboration reports the discovery of very high energy (VHE ; E >100 GeV) gamma-ray emission from the BL Lac object 1ES0033+595 (RA: 00:35:52.63, Dec.: 59:50:04.56), of unknown redshift. The source was observed with the MAGIC stereoscopic system for about 24 hours in August through October 2009 during the commissioning phase of the instrument. Preliminary analysis using the standard analysis chain shows an excess of 357 photons above 100 GeV, that corresponds to a statistical significance of 5.2 sigmas after trials. The observed flux is estimated to be 1.5% of the Crab nebula flux above 150 GeV, and it rapidly decreases with energy. No hint of variability is seen in the preliminary VHE light curve. This blazar is currently observable from the Northern hemisphere.
