Elements of Science Fiction in Young Adult Fiction
The thesis addresses the appearance of the science fiction genre in the body of children’s and young adult literature, which is generally rather connected with fantasy. Typical elements of science fiction genre are established, making it possible to distinguish between those two genres, as they are often either confused or seen as belonging to the same category. Five contemporary young adult novels by five different authors are analysed in terms of their belonging to science fiction. The analysis reveals that the novels differ in the choice of the adopted science-fiction elements, in the ways they incorporate them, as well as in the addressed topics. Yet, all the novels rely on science and technology, and they also deal with modern social and environmental issues, which are essential for their stories. Their authors do not abstain from presenting complex issues to their young audiences. Thus, even though they include fantasy elements, the novels can nevertheless be categorised as science fiction. It is concluded that while science fiction generally addresses the adult audience, young adult fiction, as well as children’s fiction, also contributes to the genre, slightly adapting science fiction to its readership.
