Creative Thinking with Dr. Seuss

The teaching of thinking skills is nowadays considered to be one of the most valuable educational practices worldwide. Their aim is to enhance intelligences by teaching students to think, and to help them organise their thoughts more efficiently. This thesis explores several sources in the area of thinking and quality teaching and looks for the best solutions. It shows that among all the skills supported by the Croatian National Curriculum for teaching and learning English as a foreign language, teaching thinking skills should be in the first place. The paper emphasizes the need for an educator to understand the process of thinking, and proposes ways in which the syllabus contents can be taught and learned more effectively. It demonstrates teaching techniques developed on the basis of authentic picture books by Dr Seuss, as applied in teaching English to young learners.
