Fuel Cells: Smarter solutions for a clean energy future

Hydrogen fuel cell is an electrochemical reactor that can continuously convert the chemical energy of a hydrogen and oxygen to electrical energy with the high efficiency. during the whole process, the only products of emissions are clean water and heat. The aim of this work was to develop catalyst and to investigate its catalytic activity for the oxygen reduction reaction (o.r.r.) using the thin-film rotating disk electrode (RDE) technique. The high surface area vulcan XC72 carbon supported PtSn catalyst for o.r.r. was prepared by attaching the catalyst powder on a glassy carbon RDE using the Nafion film. Thin-film RDE technique avoids or reduces the problem with the mass-transport resistance and enables direct evaluation of the kinetic parameters using the mass-transport relations for the unmodified RDE. This allows the direct extrapolation of RDE data on the performance of the PEM fuel cell electrodes catalyst. A comparative investigation under the same conditions was carried out on the Pt-catalyst, which was used as a model-system. PtSn/Vulcan catalyst revealed enhanced catalytic activity for the o.r.r. in acid solution in comparison to Pt/Vulcan catalyst.
