Morphological analysis of Cobitis taenia populations from Croatia(Cobitidae)

Spined loach, "Cobitis taenia L." represents a common group which consists of several different subspecies or species. Four populations of the spined loach from the Adriatic river basin (the Cetina, the Zrmanja, the Neretva river and Baćina lake) are compared with the form of C. taenia from the Black Sea river basin (the Drava river) using the coefficient of difference (C.D.) for 26 morphometric characteristics. Two meristic characteristics (number of fin rays and number of lateral and dorsal spots) are observed in all populations. Populations are described to provide a better understanding of the differences and analogies found. It was found that C.D. surpasses the significance limit (1.28) only with regard to the relation of eye diameter and interorbital distance (Oh/io), between the populations from the Drava and from the Zrmanja. This coefficient for the same relation is high also in populations of loaches from the Drava and the Cetina (1.14), and in that from the Drava and the Neretvan loach (1.09). Descriptions of specimens point on some differences which have not been statistically elaborated (e.g. absence of the black spot on the Cetinan loach, merged lateral line spots in most specimens of the Neretvan loach). All given results imply to necessity for reconsideration of the present Croatian loaches taxonomic status.
