Portalna hipertenzija
Cirrhosis represents the end stage of any chronic liver disease. Portal hypertension is one of the main consequence of cirrhosis. It results from a combination of increased intrahepatic vascular resistance and increased blood flow through the portal venous system. Increases in protal pressure cause development of a portosystemic collateral circulation with resultant compensatory portosystemic shunting and disturbed intrahepatic circulation. These factors are partly responsible for the important complications of liver cirrhosis, including gastro-esophageal varices and massive gastrointestinal bleeding, ascites, hepatorenal syndrome, recurrent infection and hepatic encephalopathy. These complications represent the major causes of death and liver transplantation in patients with liver cirrhosis.
