Analysis of CO emission spectra observed in plasmas
CO molecule is a common product observed upon reactive oxygen plasmas treatment of various organic materials. As such, its analysis is important for deducing molecular excitation schemes and atomic processes involved during plasma applications. Emission spectrum of CO molecule has different features depending on the origin of the molecule. In most cases, excited CO is a product of dissociation of CO2, oxidation of various carbon compounds or simply excitation of CO in collisions with electrons. All these processes result in different excited state ro-vibrational population of CO which give different emission spectra. In this research we used optical emission spectroscopy to study CO spectra in CO, CO2 and oxygen plasmas under conditions of low pressures. Quantum-mechanical spectral simulation of four CO electronic transitions emitting from 200 nm to 1000 nm have been performed and compared with observations. Different CO excitation mechanisms are discussed.
