Empowering children: Psychosocial assistance under difficult circumstances
The book presents descriptions of why and how children can be extensively exposed to conditions that hinder for normal development and growth in the aftermath of massive violence, such as war. Under difficult conditions the adults often perform the role of parenting inadequately, thus failing to provide the importance emotional and psychological support and guidance to children and adolescents. The book looks into ways how the effects of these stressful circumstances can be relieved by providing organized psychosocial assistance, so that the children's growth and development can be assured as normally as possible. The chapters discuss the consequences of child traumatization and the ways to ameliorate them. The overall framework is that people exposed to massive violence should be considered a part of the general, entirely normal population, who are psychologically healthy individuals who may become psychosocially dysfunctional because of their exposure to abnormal, extremely stressful events and not as people having psychological disturbances. In the first 13 chapters the theoretical and research background is provided, while in the next 18 chapters practical and hands-on programs are described in detail.
