Development of Information Sciences in Croatia. Bibliometric Analysis of Doctoral Dissertations in Information Sciences from 1978 to 2009.

The research subject of this thesis is the development of information science in Croatia. Bibliometric analysis was done on the corpus of doctoral dissertations done at Croatian universities from 1978 to 2009. On the basis of collected and processed data about the corpus consisting of 170 doctoral dissertations and 28, 188 cited references, maps of areas and topics covered by the doctoral theses were made, together with the overview of key authors and the most cited publications. The changes of interest within and among information science disciplines (archivistics and documentation, information systems, informatology, librarianship, communicology, museology, lexicography and encyclopedics) were analysed, together with the dynamics of the development of these changes according to temporal, institutional and disciplinary criteria. The results of the research are presented in two parts: I Bibliometric analysis of the doctoral dissertations in information sciences from 1978-2009, and II Methodology of research and/or the research of methodology. The first part (chapters 2-7) shows the development of the study of information sciences in Croatia ; the scope of analysed corpus of doctoral dissertations ; quantitative overview of the data about dissertations and mentors ; the overview of cited references and the analysis of co-citations. The second part (chapters 8-14) deals with the study of methodology and the discussion about the difference between impact factor and influence factor ; communicational patterns and cognitive structure of scientific areas are analysed ; the range of use of certain bibliometric methods by the comparison of the use of citation methods, method of co-citation of authors and the method of co-words on the same corpus of data are analysed ; the use of terms cohesion and coherence, as the measure of scientific cooperation and scientific communication, are advocated. The result of the research is the contribution to the methodology of bibliometric research, because it interprets and advocates the differentiation between the impact factor and influence factor. The author proves that the indicator of the obsolescence of publications could also be used for the identification of three knowledge zones: research front zone, conceptual zone and empirical zone of knowledge, and that three types of scientists are active in those zones: researchers, scholars, and predecessors. Instead of the former use of citation and co-citation analysis and the use of co-words analysis for the presentation of "knowledge map", "knowledge structure", "intellectual structure", etc., the use of bibliometric methods for the identification of four different types of networks is advocated: social networks, institutional networks, communicational networks and cognitive networks. The analysis of citation and co-citation of authors is advocated as being more suitable for the determination of the cohesion of information sciences, i.e. communicational networks, and that the co-word analysis is more suitable for the understanding of the coherence of informational sciences, i.e. cognitive networks.
