'Suburbia' discourses: kvart KVART

When we look at contemporary art events in Croatia it is easy to track their centralist model of 'geographic' articulation. Many institutions that deal with contemporary artistic practices as well as the rich variety of non-institutional practice position the Croatian capital of Zagreb as the major centre of cultural events. This pattern, however, is translated to the regional situation where major cities have supremacy over the smaller towns and finally to the urban organism itself: peripheral parts are completely ‘free’ of cultural events, particularly the visual arts. In a sense we can speculate about the stratification of ‘disappearance of cultural content’ in a geographic plan. The topic of this paper is the ‘art-situation’ in Split, the second largest Croatian city which is proud of its very rich and interesting cultural heritage. The centralist model is completely operational in the urban structure and organisation of Split. Therefore, it is essential to recognize as extremely valuable most recent efforts of artistic collectives that break the cohesion of the centralized system in order to make visible suspicious exploitation of the urban resources situated in the peripheral city zones by the new socio-political paradigm. KVART (The Association for Contemporary Art) was founded in 2006 as a response to the need for clear articulation of critical speech in relation to the problematics of local community (the municipal district of Trstenik). However, its activity reaches into the wider field of relations, where the local definition serves as a reflection of the situation which Croatian society in general is faced with. By dislocating from the strict city centre and by applying the strategies of art activism, KVART questions the specific issues of city spaces, relying on a permanent idea of dependence and conflict between periphery and centre. So, for the fourth year the artists present the results of a year-long fermentation of critical thinking on different positions of money and power that radically transform the urban landscape with no previous consensus, not caring at all for the community found in it. Defining artistic coordinates for possible and desirable reactions of the community, the members of KVART are trying to encourage active participation of that community in order to draw its attention to the possibilities of public speech as well as the possibility of critical review of its own position within the social system. Their actions are focused on the municipal district of Trstenik which is corroded by social context within which perennial domicile practice is disappearing under the invasion of neo-liberal capitalist 'appetite' oriented solely on unscrupulous exploitation based on profit and devoid of any social empathy. What does ‘suburbia’ mean nowadays in Split and how is it reflected through contemporary art practice? What are the possibilities of 'edge' and how is it defined in this specific cultural frame?
