Design of a Retaining Structure for an Excavation Pit for the Construction of the VIPNET Underground Garage
In this paper a description is given of a procedure for the construction of lateral support of an excavation pit for the construction of the three-story VIPnet garage located at Vrtni put bb in Zagreb. The excava-tion pit was performed in sand and gravel up to the depth of 9.2 meters. The excavation banks were sup-ported using two systems of retaining structures such as (1) anchored steel beam provided with wire fabric reinforcement and geotextile in the top portion of the excavation pit, and (2) anchored steel sheet piles in the bottom portion. The described retaining technique was used as it proved more economical than that involving only the use of sheet piles. Based on site investigations, determination of modulus of deformation and calculation of deformations was also described including the comparison of calculated and measured displacements. The comparison showed that usual correlations gave too low values of the moduli of deformation and thus deformations measured were considerably lower than those forecasted.
