Mineral oils in drinking and underground waters in city of Zagreb

The measurement of oil in water has been a difficult task throughout the years, the greatest difficulty being that every method has its limitations. Some methods are not able to measure oils in the low ppm ranges, whilst others are not able to distinguish between the different oil types within the sample. In this study we used the Fluo-Imager Analyzer (Skalar Analytical b.v., Breda, The Netherlands) that can do both. It is capable of detecting oils in the low ppm to low ppb (cooled detector) ranges and it can also distinguish between different types of oil present in a water sample. Detecting oils to low ppb was important because according to current regulation in Croatia the ceiling level for mineral oils in drinking waters is 20 ppb. The principle of the Fluo-Imager Analyzer is based upon a fluorescence measuring method. With the Fluo-Imager Spectral windows SFS are defined by fluorescent characteristics of basic groups of organic substances in the water sample. The objective of this study was to evaluate and compare the amount of the pollution of drinking and underground waters with mineral oils in city of Zagreb analyzing fluorescent signatures (SFS) by Fluo-Imager. In 2009 there were analyzed 2200 samples (2100 samples of drinking water and 100 samples of underground water). The results showed that mineral oils in drinking waters were in range from below 10 ppb – 12 ppm. In underground waters mineral oils were in range from below 10 ppb to 26 ppm. The results indicate that the methods of fluorescent diagnostics are an effective tool for the analysis of oil compounds in water environment. They are very quick and could be very useful in biomonitoring of pollution in drinking and underground waters and thereby in monitoring of population influence on environment.
