TEMPERATURE RELATED MATURATION AND SPAWNING OF CULTURED BLUEFIN TUNA Thunnus thynnus IN THE CENTRAL EASTERN ADRIATIC
The wild collection practice for subsequent on-growing of both adults and juveniles caused reduction in the biomass of bluefin tuna (BFT) and raised the questions concerning its biological and economical sustainability. Controlled gametogenesis, spawning and obtaining fertilized eggs of BFT in captivity is the first and most significant step towards completing the life cycle and full domestification of this fish. Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries from Split has substantial experience with induced spawning and the introduction of numerous species of fish and other marine organisms to commercial production. With a commercial partner we have succeeded in the BFT spawning for the first time in 2009.
