Non-linear comminution kinetics of steel slag – influence of ball diameter
Steel slag as industrial waste material arises as a potential substitute for dolomite filler in road construction. In this regard, grinding behaviour of steel slag has been recognized as a vital functional property. Experiments of dry grinding in laboratory planetary ball mill were performed in order to investigate comminution kinetics of steel slag. The results show non-linear change of the unbroken material content with time. Occurrence of the specific breakage rate maximum for grinding balls 30 mm in diameter was noticed at both revolution speeds. For the past thirty years, a significant increase in usage of industrial by-products and/or waste materials has been observed. Replacement of natural non-renewable mineral resources with waste materials in civil engineering sectors contributes to the protection of expendable sources of these materials. M. Nehdi [1] indicated 43 types of raw materials used in road construction sector, 11 out of 43 are industrial waste and/or by-products, and 7 belong to the metallurgical industry. This study is a part of the comprehensive research focused on the functional properties of steel slag. They determine its truly possibilities for using in road construction as a worthy replacement for dolomite filler. It describes the non-linear comminution kinetics of steel slag and investigates the influence of grinding ball diameter on specific breakage rates.
