RECONSTRUCTION OF THE SAVA RIVER ROAD BRIDGE AT JASENOVAC

The bridge crossing across the Sava and Una Rivers at Jasenovac, comprising seven independent bridge structures, provides the road link between Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The original main bridge superstructure over the Sava River was a three span prestressed concrete continuous box type beam, constructed by free cantilevering. The bridge was finished in 1973 and designed according to the relevant codes of that time. During the Croatian war for independence in 1990 several parts of the bridge were destroyed or damaged, including the main bridge across the Sava River. The superstructure and two piers were completely destroyed, while the other two piers and all foundations were in good condition and could be utilized to support the new superstructure. Two alternative solutions were analyzed for the reconstruction, a continuous prestressed superstructure similar to the destroyed bridge and a continuous steel superstructure with an orthotropic deck plate. Obtained minimum concrete dimensions were much larger than those applied in the original design, because much larger traffic loads are currently used and the seismic events must be accounted for. It meant that the foundations were to be strengthened and it was to be avoided at all costs. Consequences of the application of new codes on the design of the bridge reconstruction are presented in the paper.
