Mapping and monitoring of marine habitats in Croatia in the European perspectives of Habitat Directive

Mapping and monitoring of marine habitats are obligatory steps in their protection. The endangered Croatian marine habitats are in focus of the scientific project of the Croatian Ministry of Science, Education and Sport: “Research of threatened marine habitats in the coastal submerged karst of Croatia” of which the lecturer is the coordinator. In the lecture some of the efforts undertaken so far, which could be considered as prerequisite for the successful mapping and monitoring of marine habitats in Croatia, will be presented. Such are the results of the project “The Habitats Map of the Republic of Croatia” (2000-2004) and the development of the National Classification of Habitats (Croatian Official Gazette No. 119/2009). A connection between the Croatian National Habitat classification and habitat classification according to the EU Habitat Directive will be presented and discussed. Also, methods and results which the lecturer obtained up to now in mapping and monitoring of marine habitats - especially Posidonia meadows which are considered as priority marine NATURA 2000 habitat - will be discussed. These results were obtained in collaboration with colleagues from the University of Zadar (Professor Stewart Schultz, coordinator of the scientific project of the Croatian Ministry of Science, Education and Sport: “Monitoring and ecology of benthic communities of the Croatian Adriatic”) and the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing (Professor Zoran Vukić, coordinator of the scientific project: Underwater robotics in sub-sea protection and maritime security and the European FP 7 program “Developing the Croatian Underwater Robotics Research Potential”). For successful mapping and monitoring of marine habitats in Croatia a greater scientific and expert collaboration – intra and interdisciplinary - and greater creativity in the development and application of new technologies will be required.
